I think 3 months salary is way too much. a gorgeous good sized, good quality ring can be bought for $5-10k. I guess then again $10k is 3 months salary or more for some people.

all that matters is that my future husband picks out a durable ring that is exactly my style, I don't care if he spends a lot or a little.

I went to bluenile.com one day and picked out my *dream* ring and it came out to about $10K, probably a little much for this stage in my bf and I's lives! But maybe someday. My mom's got a stunning marquise engagement ring (just got it a year ago, it was an upgrade!) that was appraised at around $7500, it's incredibly showy for a ring that price and the clarity on the stone is great. Honestly, I say set aside a reasonable amount of money (considering salary, debt, immediate financial goals) and buy the very best diamond you can for that price, an heirloom stone. You can upgrade the setting for your 1 year or something, and if you upgrade your diamond eventually you can take the smaller stone and make a nice piece of jewelry for yourself or your daughter. I get sort of annoyed when I see ER with large diamonds, but the diamonds have poor color and clarity - they don't sparkle, and what can you do with that stone later?
I would rather have a cheaper ring that has something meaningfull engraved on it, then a flashy ring that is probably overpriced anyway.

Diamonds are beautiful but (and ducking here big time) overrated imho. I don't own any and haven't really felt the need for one. My dh and I designed our wedding rings and he had a jeweler friend make them. Those rings mean more to me than any diamond ever will.
Now, I enjoy looking at other people's rings and I tend to think many couples are trying to be more practical these days since there are a lot of couples spending their own money on weddings, etc. And in the big picture of planning your life together, an engagement ring seems like a small priority. I like the idea of selecting a nice stone and then choosing the setting around it. When you're ready for the ring, don't you think you're going to know your future bride well enough to know which priorities are most important to her and to you too?

Hard to put a price on it. I think there are less costly stones that are beautiful and may mean more to some people than a diamond.
This is difficult to answer -- it depends on a lot.
On one hand, it IS a ring that you will potentially wear forever and that's got to count for something. I'm sorry, but I don't want to be sporting a "speck" for the rest of my life. For some it's ok, but call me shallow, I want something that looks GOOD on my finger (and a speck certainly wouldn't). That being said, I dont want my bf to go into heinous debt to buy a ring, either.
I also think that if you cannot afford to buy someone a *nice* (aka NOT a speck!) ring in 14k at least, then you probably can't afford to be married.
So for me and my bf -- IF he were to propose I would probably think he'd spend around $2500-3000. If I was dating a different guy that made $500k per year, I'd expect a whopper from Tiffany. It's all relative.

Heres what we did: I knew I wanted a certain cut (princess) and size. The setting was not as big of a deal. That way I was able to pick out a nice diamond that was of good quality. We had it mounted into a very simple setting that I plan on upgrading at some point.

I just scrolled up from the end of this thread and thought that Josh was the one who bumped it, not am2882.
I got all excited there for a second, thinking "why is Josh bumping this thread, hmmm???"![]()

My DH was a poor law student when we got married so I opted for a nice honeymoon and a plain wedding band until we had been married for about 5 years, then I got a really nice 1.5 Marquis in a unique setting. I didn't think about a particular price based on salary but after reading this thread I told him it was time for an upgrade
