Are you trying to be more eco-friendly? Maggie Bags, the seatbelt bag company that makes their bags out of 100% recycled seatbelts, is trying to help us fashionistas save the planet in style.
tFAF and Maggie Bags are teaming up to bring you this awesome contest! All you have to do is post in this thread what you are doing to be more eco-friendly. Then on August 30th we will hold a drawing and one lucky winner will win the Lime Green Messenger pictured above. Just a little background info, Fed Ex truck drivers use the Lime Green seatbelts. Its an easy way for a supervisor to make sure their drivers are buckling up.

The green is pretty! Let's see....I always try to make sure the lights, fans, TV, etc. are turned off when leaving a room; I make sure my cell phone charger is unplugged when I'm done charging, turn off the water when brushing teeth, washing dishes, etc., we use high efficiency appliances, we use those reusable sports drinking jugs for water instead of buying bottles whenever possible, and I'm working on recycling magazines/newspapers instead of throwing them away. I reuse old shoe boxes for storage or for drawer organizers (the smaller boxes). If I think of more I'll come back and edit.![]()

Well, I don't own a car. So I take the bus to and from work everyday. David has a motorcycle. We also live very close to a shopping center, and can do our grocery shopping or get our Starbucks fix and get the necessities simply by walking! (I even have a cute rolling cart, if I plan on buying more than I can carry.)
We've stopped buying water in plastic bottles, and now use a Brita system and each of us totes an aluminum bottle to work with our water.
I always carry some sort of reusable shopping bag with me to carry home purchases.
And in the winter months, we don't turn our heater on. We just bundle up and snuggle. Thankfully in CA you can get away with that. Saves us money on our heating bills too!
I also do the recycling thing, cans and newspapers and magazines.

I'll list as I think of them!
DH rides motorcycle to work
Use reusable bags when grocery shopping and big ones at the mall
recycle all plastics, glass, paper, styrofoam, magazines, junk mail, etc.
separate pieces of packaging to recycle the recyclable pieces
never ever litter and pick up other people's disgusting trash
do laundry and run dishwasher in the evening and on weekends
We always return used oil after oil changes to be recycles at the gas station
turn off water when brushing teeth
yellow, let it mellow - brown, flush it down
heating/air while we're at work (unless it's too hot or cold we leave it at a level where Bailey will be comfortable)
Reusable water bottle for the gym and work
Wait for a full load to do laundry
At work - double sided copies, rather than single sided
Get and pay all bills electronically
Cut the plastic bottle holders before tossing them
If I need to throw a plastic bag away, I tie a knot in it first

You ladies seriously gave me so many ideas that I need to do. I want to be more eco friendly. I am so bad about water but finally I keep remember to shut off the tap when I brush my teeth. I started doing squats as I brush to remind my self to multitask and turn off the water

I just started doing it at the beginning of the summer and I swear my legs look so much better. I am glad I am not the only one doing this

We recycle news papers, plastic, aluminum cans, glass and anything that has the recycle sign on it. We bought a Brita and take water out with us in insulated mugs. I reuse plastic bags if we get them at a store if we didn't bring our eco bags. I avoid short trips out, my husband drives our old 1993 Honda Accord which is turning into a sad rust bucket 80 miles a day just because it gets 27 miles to the gallon even though we have much newer cars. I turn off lights when no one is in a room and don't let the water run needlessly, I unplug our chargers when not in use. I hand down any clothng items to friends or family and if they can't use them then I give it to the Good Will. I put furniture or big items that we don't need on the end of the driveway for passerby's to pick up if I can't find someone to take it and someone always takes the items. I hate to send anything big to the land fill! We take old paint and car oil to the recycling center near us when needed.
I LOVE that green! Here is what I can think of off the top of my head...
We reuse our plastic water bottles
We also use aluminum coffee cups for coffee and/or water
I use reusable shopping bags at the grocery store
We turn off all lights when not in use
Unplug/turn off power strips when items are not in use
Shut off water when brushing teeth
We only use our AC/heat when absolutely necessary
Pay bills electronically
Cut plastic bottle holders before throwing away
Wash full loads of laundry in cold water/dry at night when the weather cools off
Donate unused clothing to Goodwill
Donate newspaper to our local shelter for bedding
Recycle mailing boxes
Grow our own vegetables in our garden in the summer.

I thought of a few more:
Lucas reuses most plastic containers. We have ricotta cheese, mayonaise, sour cream containers all over the house full of lizards, cars, frogs
unplug small appliances when not in use (toaster, coffee pot, etc.). This is probably more out of fear of a house fire....

Another one!Put the dishwasher on "air dry" so it will shut off after the cycle and not use the heating system to dry.
^^ I think it has a lot to do with living in the Bay Area where it is promoted so much and they make it pretty easy - i.e. throwing all recyclables in one can and you can have as big of a can as you want and it's free of charge![]()

my parents have the huge recyclable cans for paper, trees/shrubs/leaves, then regular trash. Its funny because now they hardly fill up the trash can because most of their trash is all recyclable.

OMG - that messenger is too cute and I LOVE the color!
Ok, as far as eco-friendly...
All lightbulbs have been switched to the new flourescent ones
My car is low emissions
We recycle everything - all paper products, glass, cans, etc.
All appliances are off when not in use and I try to unplug everything possible when I leave for work
We refill old water bottles
Turn off water while brushing teeth
Outside water usage and laundry done in evenings
Cut the plastic 6-pack bottle holders
Empty the water from the dehumidifier onto the landscaping out front to help water it
Oh, and if we're not in a room, the lights aren't on.
